Die Casting

Die casting involves high temperatures and a variety of alloys, press sizes, and casting weights. To help prevent solder on the die surface, our die casting lubricants rapidly remove heat to form a protective film quickly. This not only reduces cycle times but minimizes downtime, improves productivity, and extends die lifespan.

We offer a variety of die lubricants, engineered for specific qualities:

  • Rapid die surface cooling
  • Die/solder protection
  • Smooth metal flow
  • Maintaining die temperature ranges

Food Processing, Agribusiness, and Fermentations

The food processing and agribusiness industries perform processes that cause air entrainment and foam formation within their products. High pressures, chemical reactions, cell lysis, and intense mixing and agitation are just a few conditions that can generate problematic foaming events. To combat these issues, Applied Material Solutions offers a variety of food-grade antifoams and defoamers.

These products are used in a variety of direct and indirect food contact applications, where they prevent product defects, overflowing tanks, and slowed processing times. Our foam control solutions enable food processors to optimize their processes and improve product quality while adhering to regulatory requirements.

Some common food industry applications our products work with include:

  • Grain processing
  • Fruit and vegetable washing
  • Meat processing
  • Dairy products
  • Fermentations, including ethanol, enzymes, yeast, and amino acids

Fuel Ethanol Production

Whether ethanol is produced using dry or wet milling processes, the fuel ethanol industry requires reliable additives to maximize their yields. Wet mills rely upon defoamers for their mill separations and fermentations, and dry mills rely on corn oil demulsifiers to maximize their corn oil recovery program
Our innovative line of AMulSion™ corn oil separation aids is customizable to meet the unique needs of each plant. For antifoam and defoamer applications, our TRANS brand of additives has been trusted throughout this industry for over 40 years. In addition, we offer a range of portable trial pumps and dedicated material pumps. These products are commonly used to accurately and reliably introduce demulsifiers into syrup streams; however, they are also suitable for adding antifoam into wet mill processes.

Paints, Inks, Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants and Elastomers (PICA/CASE)

Paint, inks, coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomer manufacturers utilize numerous raw materials and processing techniques that can cause foam to develop. For example, when waterborne coatings or adhesives are mixed or filled into containers, heads of foam can develop. During the application of these products, entrained air and foam can cause surface defects, such as craters, pinholes, and fisheyes.

To prevent these issues and ensure faster production times, industrial defoamers are a crucial element in many waterborne products. 100% active defoamers are typically used to control foam formation during pigment grinding processes. These products can withstand high shear forces and large viscosity differentials between the foaming medium and defoamer droplets.

Selecting the most suitable industrial defoamer for grinding operations requires care and expertise because the shear forces can reduce defoamer droplets to a size too small to be effective, resulting in a significant loss of defoaming efficacy. AMS offers customized formulations to ensure the needs of each defoaming application are met. Our defoamer products incorporate micron-sized hydrophobic silica particles from our AMSil brand of treated silica to ensure optimal defoaming performance. This same AMSil brand of hydrophobic silica is also used by coating and elastomer manufacturers as matting agents and to control viscosity and rheology.

Pulp & Paper Processing

The manufacturing of pulp and paper involves many chemical compounds which can cause foam. These compounds are usually generated in the process of making pulp. Some of these chemicals are tall oil, rosin, lignin and other wood related substances.

The foam caused by these substances must be controlled in order to ensure the safe and efficient manufacturing of pulp and paper. Foam can cause hazardous working conditions, slows production, pump cavitation, increases soda loss in the pulp mill, and defects in the paper being made just to name a few issues associated with poor foam control.

AMS defoamers reliably reduce foam and entrained air in the pulp and paper making process. Better entrained air removal in the pulp mill allows for better washing, removal of pitch constituents, and better sodium recovery. On paper machines there is better formation, drainage, and less steam usage.

AMS also makes colloidal silicas for use in drainage and retention aid programs. AMS has several colloidal silicas with a variety of particle sizes and surface areas to meet the needs of any drainage and retention aid program.

AMS offers a range of defoamers for effluent systems. These defoamers effectively control foam in an effluent system which prevents dried foam from forming on the top of the effluent pond and ensures no oil is observed in the waterways into which the effluent is discharged.

Water Treatment

The municipal and industrial water treatment industries commonly experience foaming and air entrainment that can slow, stall, or even halt operations. When waterborne or airborne, uncontained foam creates hazardous slippery situations and visual obstructions. It can also easily transport microorganisms and chemicals to areas they don’t belong in.

To prevent these issues, AMS offers an extensive range of antifoam products suitable for highly variable systems. Our silicone and non-silicone antifoam solutions are suitable for problems stemming from biological macromolecules as well as surfactant contamination from industrial chemicals. We also offer specialized chemistries for destroying foam under other unique conditions.

Our products are used in applications that include:

  • Cooling towers
  • Aeration basins
  • Final effluent
  • Landfill leachate
  • Manure pits
  • Boiler water treatment
